Suffer From Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Learn What Foods to Avoid

If you are one of the many people in the world today who are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, then the first thing you are going to want to do is make a change in your diet. You want to cut certain foods out of your diet, namely fatty and sugary foods and you also want to cut caffeine out of your life as much as you can. This is because all of these are considered as being gastrointestinal irritants and so they will only result in worsening your symptoms.

Foods to Avoid

It is important to want to learn more about the different foods that you should avoid if you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. Red meat should be avoided, and this includes ground beef, hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks, roast beef, pastrami, salami, bologna, pepperoni, corned beef, ham, and sausage. Dairy products also often trigger irritable bowel syndrome and therefore should be avoided, and this includes cream cheese, ice cream, whipped cream, yogurt, and butter.

Other foods that should be avoided are: French fries, onion rings, corn dogs, fried chicken, shortening, margarine, salad dressings, tartar sauce, mayonnaise, shredded coconut, solid chocolate, olives, nuts and nut butters, pie crust, potato chips, corn chips, and Cool Whip.

Remember that meat, dairy products, and egg yolks are all dangerous when it comes to a condition such as irritable bowel syndrome, and in fact, in some people their high fat content actually can cause violent and rapid colon spasms. There are many other foods that you want to avoid as well if you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, but there are also certain foods that you want to increase in your diet.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are always important to include in any diet, and you should be drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day. Keeping a food diary is going to be a great idea, because this will help you to keep track of the foods and beverages that you are consuming and whether any of them are having a negative impact on your condition. If so, you can then remove these from your diet and your symptoms will be relieved, even a little bit.

You can also bring this diary with you to the doctor and use it as a sort of referral, which they will be able to use in order to assess your condition, keep track of your progress, and determine what treatment methods are going to be best for you.
