From Mary Alice Kemery to the Most Famous Name in Astrology: Linda Goodman
In the 70 years she spent on this earth, she traversed from Mary Alice Kemery to the most famous name in astrology: Linda Goodman. Active in radio during World War II, and later on heavily involved in shaping the fate of the United States' civil rights movements by acting as a speech writer to Whitney Young, she gradually gravitated to the spiritual aspects of her being. As early as 1968, the 43 year young writer and budding astrologer published her first work on the topic, and when Linda Goodman's "Sun Signs" first came out, it made the New York Times Bestseller List. Several more books followed, each digging just a bit deeper into the meaning of the various sun signs, and the relationship that they enjoy with one another.
Yet Linda Goodman's forays into the spiritualist realms went further than astrology; she is famous for eschewing clocks and watches, and those which were found within the vicinity of her home were notorious for all pointing to different times. Referring to time alternatively as the fourth dimension and a false reality found on earth, she expressed her strong understanding that time was robbing the human spirit of the commune with the timelessness of creation and therefore was, well, a waste of time.
Her no nonsense attitude and astrological know-how propelled her into the presence of temporal greatness and fellow astrologers, actors, and even multi-millionaires and politicians put her on their guest lists. Toward the close of her life, Linda Goodman explored her role in setting up an astrological compatibility guide that would be more detailed and all-encompassing than any that had been done before, including her own works.
Sadly, the woman who went from being Mary Alice Kemery to the most famous name in Astrology - Linda Goodman - did not live long enough to see her dream fulfilled and she died unexpectedly from complications related to diabetes. The spokeswoman of her latter years, Crystal Bush, posthumously published her work up to that point, and loyal Linda Goodman believers and fans had a chance to still benefit from her insights even after her death. Even today, more than 10 years after her death, she still has a sizeable following and some have even intimated that perhaps the famed astrologer is not truly dead, but instead living in self imposed seclusion in a foreign country. Much like any beloved figure, Linda Goodman continues to be a matter of legend.
