There are many people who, after watching a kung fu movie or television program, want to learn how to do the intricate moves that they have seen. Perhaps they want to learn kung fu as a form of exercise, or perhaps they would like to learn it as a form of self-defense. Whatever the personal reason, people can learn from the masters at one of the kung fu schools in China.
Shaolin Kung Fu Schools
There were once many kung fu schools in the Shaolin area of China. However, because of a decision made by abbot Shi Yong Xin, almost all of the kung fu schools in Shaolin were destroyed. Now, there are only a few available schools that teach the Shaolin form of kung fu, and they can be found most notably in the Shaolin Temple, and in Wushu Guan.
Although it is unknown whether teaching will continue in the Shaolin Temple, the Wushu Guan kung fu schools will continue on, because they are property of the Chinese government. Now, if you are looking to participate in one of the various Chinese kung fu schools, you can visit Shaolin, but Dengfeng is currently where most of the kung fu schools are located.
The Wushu Guan Kung Fu School
Although this school teaches ancient kung fu techniques, it is actually very modern in appearance. Wushu Guan has a space that is about 2,900 square meters. It was designed primarily so that foreigners could learn kung fu. Wushu Guan, in addition to being a school, also has an attached restaurant and hotel.
In Wushu Guan, groups of foreigners will train for about 4 hours a day. This is actually half the time that that other schools require of their students. While Chinese students can study here too, traditionally they train in groups of about 50, and the Wushu Guan is not large enough to accommodate all of those students at once.
The Tagou
This famous school has been considered to be the official training school of the Shaolin Temple. The main attraction of this school is the fact that it has a enormous amount of space. The training courts of the school can accommodate 7,500 kung fu students at once! This school is also open to foreigners, who will find that the accommodations are very comfortable, with such amenities as air conditioning. Foreigners also can benefit from an English to Chinese translator.
The price for these schools vary depending on how long you want to stay and train, but you should not expect to pay anything less than a couple hundred dollars per month. To find out more about these excellent kung fu schools, search the internet for information.
