Tarot Card Spreads Showing the High Priestess or Empress
It is curious that many a novice to tarot readings believes the high priestess and empress cards to be somewhat interchangeable. Nothing could be further from the truth! As a matter of fact, tarot card spreads showing the high priestess or empress point toward entirely different pasts or futures and depending on the other modifying cards surrounding them, the meaning is entirely different as is the attitude that they seek to convey. Remember also that men, just as women, may be characterized by either high priestess or empress!
The high priestess of the tarot is of course considered the premier card for the individual seeking to discern that which is hidden from the conscious and which is most likely buried deep in the subconscious. As such she may point toward a need to trust intuition, such as when she is modified by the presence of judgment, or the warning to not let the inner voice become too loud, lest a powerful individual - usually signified by the devil card - take uninvited notice. Tolerance and compassion are also associated with the high priestess and overall she is a positive card showing in any of the various tarot card spreads.
On the other hand, the empress card has much more earthy connotations. She is the mother and as such combines nurture with sexuality, power with submission, and profusion with sacrifice. The empress takes on a different role depending on the time in life and as such it might be the role of sexuality that is stronger in some times than the role of nurturing although this may shift as needed by life's circumstances. It is interesting to note that men who see the empress fail to recognize that it may speak to the nurturing part in their own characters and instead the first question almost inevitably deals with a potential pregnancy in their ladylove's life.
Both empress and high priestess have great significance on the cards by which they are modified and any time that a single or even two cards are used in tarot card spreads, it is highly advisable to opt for a second reading, preferably a Celtic cross spread. Depending on the location of either empress of high priestess, the skilled reader has a good chance at arriving at a highly specialized reading that applies to the querent with respect to hopes and fears but also the eventual outcome for any situation.
